Two days ago I jumped on Facebook, to go LIVE for one of the first times.
But before I jumped online, I had just had a strong coffee but I hadn’t had breakfast yet! So I was super jittery and trying to talk properly! I kept messing up my words and what I was trying to say.
So I’m here again to go over these important points again in detail (and without the jitters).
I’m taking about the three critical steps that you should cover before you ever market your business on Facebook.
Before you go and spend your first $1, $10 or $100. Before you spend this money testing out an idea on Facebook. There’s three basic but very vital rules that you should have covered BEFORE going ahead and spending money on Facebook ads.
Because, these are the three things that are really going to help you get the results that you are probably expecting.
If you have marketed on Facebook before, but you didn’t get the results you were expecting. Maybe you didn’t get the results you thought you were going to get, or you didn’t get the results that you’ve heard OTHER people get..
It’s probably because one of these three things were missing.
It’s very common for someone who is new to marketing, who has a good product/service, they have a good business, to miss these things. It’s very common for someone who is just starting out with marketing their business.
Who This is Not For
These three basic rules are not for you if you are already successfully marketing your business on Facebook with a regular profit.
You’re probably not going to get a lot out of these three things, you’re probably doing these already and doing them well if you are already profitable with Facebook marketing.
If you and I haven’t been introduced before, maybe you’ve just stumbled into me here for the first time… my name is Craig Marty. I’m co-founder of our online marketing agency called Customore (formally ‘Clarify Marketing’. But that’s not important right now! I just wanted to stop here and say HELLO and introduce myself.
3 Facebook Marketing Rules
I wouldn’t even spend $20 of my own money on marketing, before I had these three things covered.
I wouldn’t spend even $20 of my clients money either! It’s simply just not worth it, because these are three important rules.
I’m going to go over these things quickly, and then I’ll tell you where you can get more information (for free) on these three rules if you want to dive deeper into the details (you should).
Rule 1
If you are going to market your product or your service on Facebook, do not talk about yourself in the advertisement.
You will a lot of marketing messages from business saying things like:
“We’ve been in the area, serving locals for 25 years!”
“We’ve done 375 local jobs over the last 50 years!”
“We have THIS qualification, and THAT qualification.”
Wording like this, marketing messages like this, are not what makes a good ad on Facebook.
I’m going to go over these rules quickly here – so let’s keep rolling!
Rule 2
Always know WHO you are marketing to, before you even start setting up your Ad on Facebook.
Have a slow and thorough think about WHO you want to market to!
What I mean by this is.. if you were a home builder and you wanted to market your business on Facebook to find new clients who want to have a new home built..
You probably shouldn’t market your business to people who are 55 and older. It is more likely that these people are more settled into their home, where they are going to live forever.
Therefore, if you are a home builder you would probably market to people who are 30-35 and above. These people are perhaps more likely going to be ready to build their dream home, they have probably been in their careers longer and have more money to spend!
This is just an example of how Rule 2 works in action.
Rule 3
This is one you’ve probably heard a lot if you’ve been listening and watching other people online who teach and coach these topics.
Rule 3 is:
“don’t ask for marriage, on the first date.”
Imagine that you were out on a first date with someone, a person you had only recently met. You were both at a nice Italian restaurant, enjoying the food and having a good first date conversation.
You then turn to your date and say “look, it seems like things are going well on this first date so… would you like to get married?”
Do you think that this would be received as being a little bit weird by your date?
Yes.
This is how a lot of business owners market on Facebook. They will say the same kind of thing in their ad. The Ad equivalent to a first date marriage proposal is:
“Buy this thing right now”.
Is this making sense? If you have a question about this, just ask it below in the comment section and I’ll reply to you soon after.
An Ad like that would not be a soft introduction, would it?
The reason why this is not a good idea on Facebook Ads is simply because you are asking for a big commitment.
Even if you were to say “buy one get one free”, or “50% off your first order”. These are still big commitments for a customer who doesn’t know your business.
I recommend you avoid putting your customers in a position where they need to make even a medium sized commitment to become your customer.
That’s the third basic rule that I suggest you follow BEFORE you spend your first dollar, marketing your business on Facebook.
Be sure you can tick these three boxes first before throwing money at your marketing campaign.

Hi there Craig
I have made a mess of my Facebook profile.
Simpley is it possible to delete all my current accounts 7. I’m without passwords. No idea how this happened. No idea how to contact Facebook my small hobby business is dead in the water. And I’m frustrated as hell
Any idea’s
Hey there, it’s only recommended that you have 1 Facebook account. If you contact Facebook and tell them you have 7 accounts and want them all restored, they are likely not going to give you either. (Plus they are not known for their customer support to say the least). Perhaps decide on one you want to get back and go after that. There is Facebook support, a quick Google search will show you where and how.
Long term, hold only one account. Be extra safe with what you post and complete your ‘Business Manager’ set up (Quick google search for that also) to show you’re a real business.
