This episode proves that, no matter who you are.. There is always at least one way you can get a sale. Welcome to episode thirty four.
There’s a story behind this post.
I was in the city today, passing through Central train station after meeting with a client and reviewing their phone sales process with them. How they were receiving sales enquiries, and then processing and calling them, and so on.
Anyway, I stopped in one of those tiny convenience stores to buy a bottle of water. As I was lining up to pay, out of the corner of my eye another figure walked into the store. I turned to look, which is just a natural human caveman response I guess, to make sure he wasn’t going to hit me over the head with a rock and steal my cave..
As I turned I saw that this figure was a man with no shoes, dirty jeans and a very very ripped t-shirt. When he jumped and ran out of the store you could see all his lower back through the shirt, but I’ll get to that in a minute.
This guy had either had the best or worst night to remember. But sadly something in eyes and face told me it hadn’t been a good night, week or year.
When our eyes met he very quickly said “I just need 50c for the pay phone”. I had my wallet literally opened and my fingers were in the coin pocket to pay for my bottle of water.
I had just touched a 50c coin as I was digging for gold, so it was about 1 second in total before he had the 50c coin in his hand. I handed it to him.
Without another second delay, I think he said ‘thanks’ as in one motion he jumped, spun 180 degrees and bolted out of the store and around the corner. He was very very quick. I thought there must of been security or police nearby who was going to kick him out, so he ran.
I walked to the counter, the employee in the convenience store looked at me, I looked at him and I said “i guess he was in a rush”. I paid for the water and as I walked out I looked to the right and there he was…
.. at a payphone making a call.
No shoes, low hanging jeans and half of his back on show as he was facing the phone making a call at a payphone.
I didn’t even realise there was still pay-phones around. I guess the last remaining few are at main train stations.
What do you think is the moral of this story?
To learn the moral, you need to first ask ‘how did this guy know that me (or someone else) would give him the 50 cents?’.
It seemed like this was not the first time this guy had asked for some money off a stranger.
So, he knew it works.
He knew that all he had to do was ask for it. Maybe he has to ask 5 people until someone says yes. Maybe 10.
But just the act of asking gets him the result that he wants.
I hope the guy is ok, I hope he is not in too much trouble. It’s sad to think that he is someone’s son, someones brother and maybe someone’s Dad.
He reminded us all of something. Sometimes the best way to “get a sale”, is just to ask for it.
Even when you’re an employee, it’s important to make sales. Even if you work in a supermarket selling groceries, it’s important to process all these customers as smoothly and as quickly as possible. I use the grocery as an example because there is always customers flowing through – it’s not a hard sell is it?
It seems like people will always buy their milk and bread.
There are businesses that have a harder time selling their services and products. Is that the type of business you’re in?
Is it a bigger ticket item? Does it take your customers longer to decide if they will go ahead with your quote?
Whether you are in an easy sale or a hard sale business, this episode was for you.
When you’ve been working with a client and they have been indecisive, consider just asking for the sale. Or just tell them “when you’re ready, I’ll send it over to you.” / or “do you want me to get it in today’s post for you? / “or, do you want me to deliver it tomorrow afternoon?”
There’s 101 ways you can ask, just pick one of them.
I really enjoyed this episode. Sometimes a business can be too focused on being everyone’s best friend and not wanting to put pressure on someone. And you shouldn’t put pressure on anyone. Asking them if they want to finally get what it is you’re selling is more so you doing them a favour, if you believe in what you’re selling that is.
Here, let me show you how I practice what I preach.
I have a book out and available called ‘How to Get Customers From Facebook Ads Ads – Even if you’ve tried and failed before’.
If you want a free copy of this book, I will send you a free copy. The book was written for business owners who are either beginners to Facebook Ads, or they haven’t got it to work yet.
If you cover the postage and handling fee, the book itself is your’s at no charge. You can go to the following link, to claim your copy of this Facebook ads book, while it’s still available.
Just go to: https://craigmarty.com/free-book-on-facebook-ads
That’s me just asking you to get a copy of my book so maybe one day you can be my customer.
Here’s the thing, if you’re interested you’ll get your free copy of the book. And if you’re not, you won’t.
But if I never offered it, NO ONE could possible get a copy. Does that make sense?
And there we have it, enjoy the rest of your day, and I’ll speak to you again soon.
